COVID-19 has exacerbated and brought to light just how many communities around the world are food insecure. And awareness is growing that our industrial, corporatised food systems is unable to ensure that all people have access to diverse and nutritious food, with the need to shift to localised food systems becoming an imperative. In the spirit of ubuntu, small-scale farmers and community activists have come together to share food and knowledge on starting home food gardens in this precarious time. Urban farmer and member of African Women in Agriculture (AWIA), Sibongile Cele tells us more. She also belongs to Rainbow Maize Farmers, a collective that grows, shares and saves indigenous seed varieties of maize, beans and other heritage crops, and they come together to share information through Izindaba Zokludla (Conversations about food) You can find out more via their Facebook page (@IzindabaZokudla).
